Andrew Musgrave achieves first World Cup points

Another milestone was reached yesterday in the British cross-country skiing programme when Andrew Musgrave from Aberdeenshire became the first Briton ever to earn World Cup points in cross country skiing.

The annual “Tour de Ski” opened in Oberhof, Germany, yesterday with a 3.75 km freestyle prologue. In a year with no Olympics and no World Championships, the Tour is the major event in the cross-country calendar this year. The world’s elite skiers will race nine times over 11 days in five venues in Germany and Italy, culminating in an exhausting race up an alpine slalom course. It is a test of both technical ability and endurance with no time to recover fully after each race. As part of the FIS (International Ski Federation) World Cup circuit skiers finishing in the top 30 of each race are awarded points with the winner of the most points becoming World Champion at the end of the season.

Britain has never sent a skier to the Tour de Ski before this season. The current British team are all young compared with the top skiers in the world as it takes years to build up the endurance needed for the sport. But following his steady improvement over the last few seasons Andrew Musgrave decided he was ready for the challenge and yesterday pulled off his best result so far in international skiing when he finished 28th out of 99 of the world’s best skiers. Going out second in the timetrial event (where the skiers set off at 30 second intervals, with the top seeds going last) he had nobody to gauge his progress against and conditions on the course were difficult with the previous night’s rain having iced over to leave a rough, glazed track. His time at the half-way mark stood as the fastest until the top ranked skiers went through and when he finished he knew he had had a good race - but then had to wait while 97 other skiers came over the line to find out whether he had broken the top 30 barrier.

After the race GB Head Coach, Roy Young, said that this race had been one of the main targets for Andrew for this season, but that in such a competitive field it is impossible to predict how a race will turn out. The Tour continues in Oberhof today with a 15 km race in the classic style before moving to southern Germany where the first of the sprint events will take place tomorrow.
