SCOTLAND’S SKI SEASON GOING STRONG AS SNOW HOLDS AND EVENTS LINE UP
Scotland’s five mountain resorts are celebrating one of the most memorable winter periods in recent years, with spectacular half-term conditions, sunshine and great snow attracting skiers and snowboarders from across the UK.
Across the Highlands, uplifts have been spinning steadily, events calendars are packed, and despite a shift to slightly milder temperatures in the forecast, upper-mountain cover remains strong.
NEW SHARED TRAVEL INITIATIVE AIMS TO BOOST ACCESS AND SUSTAINABILITY
This winter saw the launch of Mountain Rideshare in Scotland, a new car-sharing platform designed specifically for mountain and outdoor communities that makes it easier, cheaper and more sustainable to travel to mountain resorts and events. The service connects drivers with spare seats to passengers headed the same way, helping reduce single-occupancy traffic, ease parking pressure and lower the environmental impact of travel to outdoor destinations. Mountain Rideshare is already working with established Scottish resorts including Glencoe, Cairngorm and The Lecht, and organisers hope shared travel will become a normal part of the mountain experience as weekends and busy periods continue to challenge infrastructure and accessibility.
GLENCOE MOUNTAIN RESORT
There’s a sense of celebration at Glencoe this season as the resort marks its 70th birthday, a major milestone for one of Scotland’s most iconic snowsports destinations after a tough couple of years with minimal snow. Half term was described as “a cracker”, with bluebird skies, crisp snow and plenty of smiles on the lifts.
The upper mountain is currently holding particularly well, with conditions looking strong heading into the weekend and a packed event calendar:
The Glencoe Gathering is taking place this weekend, where Snowsport Scotland will be hosting a Futures Session.
The Rannoch Race is on the agenda for enthusiastic competitors: a DIY Banked Slalom scheduled for 21 March,
And the Coe Cup (Freeride) is set to run across an extended, weather-dependent window in March, giving riders a flexible chance to chase prime conditions.
GLENSHEE SNOWSPORTS CENTRE
Further east, Glenshee has enjoyed excellent cover throughout February and into March. Even with milder temperatures creeping in, snow surfaces remain solid and skiing continues uninterrupted.
Attention turns this weekend to Saturday floodlit sessions, offering an atmospheric evening on snow under lights.
Glenshee’s broad terrain and convivial vibe have made it a favourite stop for many Scottish snowsports enthusiasts this season.
CAIRNGORM MOUNTAIN
At Cairngorm, the season continues to run smoothly with robust snow depths and a vibrant mix of events.
This weekend sees the Scottish Children’s Championships and Bairn’s Bucket Race on the schedule, while 15th March will bring the Cairngorm Snowboard Club Banked Slalom alongside the UpBattle splitboarding event, highlighting both grassroots and adventurous riding communities.
THE LECHT
At The Lecht, the resort’s team has been hard at work keeping surfaces in the best possible shape. Pisters have been strategically moving snow with blowers to reinforce thinner areas and ensure runs remain skiable as temperatures rise.
With a milder forecast over the next few days, careful maintenance will be key to sustaining cover and extending the season where possible.
NEVIS RANGE
Nevis Range will reopen lifts on Thursday ahead of the weekend, bringing more terrain back to life. In a testament to the dedication of the snowsports community, the resort is operating with the help of volunteers who are helping keep lifts turning and terrain accessible.
