GLENCOE MOUNTAIN REFLECTS ON MEMORABLE WINTER SEASON
In Scotland, days like April 13 at Glencoe Mountain Resort don’t come round often.
Known now as “Mega Monday,” the mountain woke to a fresh blanket of powder stretching from summit to base. By mid-morning, skiers and snowboarders were carving through what many would later call some of the best conditions the resort has ever seen. For staff and visitors alike, it became the kind of day that defines an entire season.
That moment of magic crowned a winter shaped by contrasts. Reliable snowfall on the upper mountain from mid-January through to mid-April kept the resort open for 81 days, offering consistent opportunities for those willing to seek out the best terrain. Lower down, conditions came and went, often favouring more experienced riders who could make the most of changing snow.
And when everything came together, people showed up. Around 14,000 skiers and snowboarders took to the slopes over the season, joined by an even larger wave of visitors drawn to sledging and the mountain experience itself. With roughly 35,000 sledgers (and counting as sledging remains open) the resort saw a noticeable shift, with more people coming simply to enjoy the snow, the views, and the atmosphere.
Ski touring continued its steady rise in popularity, while the ski school was rarely short of demand when snow conditions allowed it to run. More beginners than ever seemed eager to take those first turns, hinting at a new generation discovering the sport.
Behind the scenes, preparations are already underway for the winters to come. A new Demaclenko Snow Pro all-weather snowmaking unit has been added, set to double the resort’s snowmaking capacity and provide a buffer against the unpredictability of natural snowfall.
But for now, the focus is turning from snow to sunshine. As the last patches of winter recede, Glencoe is gearing up for a packed summer season. The mountain will soon host the international “Float the Highlands” Onewheel event, alongside high-adrenaline rounds of the Scottish Downhill Association series, including the Scottish Championships.
