SUMMER ADVENTURES: GO HUT-TO-HUT HIKING IN THE HIGH TATRAS

The High Tatras may be the smallest alpine mountain range in the world, but they offer one of Europe’s most authentic hut-to-hut hiking experiences. Straddling northern Slovakia and southern Poland, this compact yet dramatic range combines sharp peaks, glacial lakes and an authentic mountain culture.

With more than 350 kilometres of marked trails, traditional mountain huts and excellent access, the High Tatras are ideal for anyone looking to explore the Alps’ quieter cousin—whether on a short day hike or a multi-day hut-to-hut journey.

WHY CHOOSE THE HIGH TATRAS?

Within a relatively small area, the Tatras deliver huge variety:

  • Over 85 glacial lakes, including Štrbské pleso and Popradské pleso

  • Gerlachovský štít (2,655 m), the highest peak in the Carpathians

  • Iconic summits such as Lomnický štít, accessible by cable car

  • Waterfalls, alpine valleys and rare mountain wildlife

  • 13 traditional mountain huts, ideal pit-stops while trekking

MORE THAN JUST HIKING

A hut-to-hut experience in the Tatras is about slowing down and connecting with mountain life. Each hut has its own atmosphere and history, shaped by generations of keepers and porters.

A highlight is Rainerova chata, the oldest preserved hut in the Tatras, hidden in the Malá Studená Valley. Part shelter, part museum, it showcases historic climbing and porter equipment. Its long-time guardian, Peter Petras, is known for welcoming hikers personally - offering tea, stories and, in winter, a famous ice nativity scene.

HIKING ROUTES FOR ALL ABILITIES

One of the best starting points is Hrebienok, reached easily by funicular from Starý Smokovec. From here, you can link multiple huts depending on time and fitness.

Easy day walk (2–3 huts):
Hrebienok → Rainerova chata → Bilíkova chata (optional Zamkovského chata)
2–4 hours, easy terrain, waterfalls and forest trails

Full-day circuit (3–4 huts):
Add Zamkovského chata and continue to Téryho chata
5–7 hours, moderate difficulty, classic alpine scenery

Overnight hut-to-hut (4–5 huts):
Day 1: Hrebienok → Rainerova → Zamkovského → Téryho chata (overnight)
Day 2: Continue to Zbojnícka chata and descend via a different valley
A truly immersive mountain experience

TATRA SHERPAS: THE HIDDEN HEROES

Many Tatras huts are unreachable by road or cable car. Everything - food, fuel and supplies - is carried up by Tatra Sherpas, using traditional wooden frames and loads of up to 100kg.

Officially recognised as part of Slovakia’s cultural heritage, these porters are central to the hut-to-hut experience. Meeting one on the trail is a powerful reminder that these mountains are still shaped by human strength and tradition.

HOW DO I GET TO THE HIGH TATRAS?

Reaching the Tatras is easy. Direct flights from London Luton to Poprad operate year-round. Additional connections from Stansted or Liverpool via Košice and many more from Kraków provide flexible options, with straightforward onward travel by train, shuttle, or car.
