10 REASONS TO VISIT SLOVAKIA’S TATRA MOUNTAINS IN 2026
When winter calls, the mountains of Slovakia answer — and 2026 brings even more magic to the Tatra Mountains. Here are 10 irresistible reasons why this European ski and snowboard haven should be on your travel radar this winter season.
1. Affordable alternative to the Alps
Slovakia’s Tatra Mountains bring many of the joys of the Alps — snow, variety, winter charm — but often with more modest prices, fewer crowds and a warm welcome. It’s a winter ski escape that feels both special and wallet-friendly.
2. Fantastic snow throughout the winter
Jasná-Chopok in Liptov Region is Slovakia’s top destination for reliable, season-long skiing. The resort offers 51km of slopes with average annual snowfall of 335 cm, plus there are extensive snowmaking facilities to top-up when needed. Whether you're chasing powder or prefer to cruise the pistes, Jasná delivers.
3. Slopes for all abilities
Do you yearn for smooth groomed pistes, challenging off-piste terrain, family-friendly slopes, or a gentle ski on tree-lined runs? The Tatra Mountains cover it all. Jasná is your best bet for World Cup-level descents, dedicated freeride zones and excellent night skiing for all the family, whilst Tatranská Lomnica is perfect for parents with young children.
4. World-class lift systems
No need to worry about waiting for hours in lift queues. Jasná has 30 cable cars and ski lifts with a capacity of 33,000 people in an hour. Štrbské Pleso has upped its game for 2025-26 with a new eight-seater Leitner chair lift, complete with heated seats, bubble shields and a capacity of up to 2,400 passengers per hour. Less time on lifts, more time sliding.
5. Thermal spas for post-ski relaxation
After a day on the mountain, unwind in Liptov’s thermal spas and water parks. Warm mineral pools, saunas and spa rituals — all nestled beneath mountainous horizons — offer a soothing place to soak weary limbs. Check out the thermal water parks in Poprad, Liptovský Mikuláš and the thermal heart of Liptov Region, Besenova.
6. Plenty of activities for non-skiers
Travelling with a non-slider? There’s plenty to entertain everyone in the Tatras Mountains - from tranquil winter hikes to mountain huts and 2.6km tobogganing trail in Hrebienok to Christmas markets in Poprad and Liptovsky Mikulas and stargazing beneath the glittering night sky.
7. Easy, eco-friendly travel options
Both the High Tatras and Liptov are connected by efficient cable cars, ski-buses and shuttle services — meaning you can leave the car behind, travel sustainably, and enjoy stress-free travel as you explore the region.
8. Explore the unique Tatra Ice Dome
There aren’t many ski resorts that offer a cathedral of ice beneath its snow-capped peaks. The Tatra Ice Dome — built from 225 tonnes of ice and accessible via funicular from Starý Smokovec — returns in 2026 with a glittering array of ice sculptures and light effects. Visit during one of their open-air concerts; it’s a surreal, beautiful winter spectacle.
9. Sample local cuisine
Skiing isn’t just about snow. Warm up with hearty Slovak dishes between runs — from local comfort food to mountain tea with honey — best sampled in a cosy mountain hut or valley restaurants. It’s one of the best ways to get under-the-skin of the local culture.
10. Easy flights from the UK
Flights run regularly to Slovakia from London Luton to Poprad. Alternatively, you can also fly to Košice from London Luton, London Stansted or Liverpool John Lennon Airport, making this winter destination both affordable and easily accessible.
