WHAT IS SKI MOUNTAINEERING (SKIMO)?
Ski mountaineering combines skiing with uphill travel and mountaineering skills to explore snow-covered mountain terrain. Using climbing skins attached to their skis, participants ascend slopes before removing the skins to ski back down. Steeper sections may involve carrying skis and using crampons or an ice axe. From scenic mountain journeys to competitive racing, ski mountaineering offers a rewarding way to experience the winter mountains, requiring fitness, avalanche awareness and navigation skills.
